Senior Staff Engineer and Tech Lead for Figma's Databases Team
Sammy Steele is the tech lead for Figma's databases team where she has spent the last few years leading Figma's databases through 100x growth, driving the evolution from a single 24XL RDS instance into a fully horizontally sharded backend. Before Figma, Sammy worked at Dropbox where she built out their petabyte scale metadata and search systems. She co-led a project to scale beyond the limits of horizontally sharded MySQL. This required building a strongly consistent, highly available KV store, PandaDB, and rearchitecting the Edgestore metadata system on top of PandaDB. Before Dropbox, Sammy graduated from Stanford with an MS in Computer Science and a BS in Mathematical Computational Sciences. Sammy loves talking about all things related to technical leadership or infrastructure. In her free time she is usually searching for deep powder, perfect swells, fair winds, or the answer to the Riemann Hypothesis.
